The Highway Department operates and maintains the infrastructure within the Unincorporated Area of the Town. It is responsible for all road maintenance including streetlights, signs and trees; snow removal; storm drains and sanitary sewers; street tree maintenance and plantings; and park maintenance within the Town. In addition, the department maintains and repairs the Town's fleet of vehicles and equipment. The department performs both routine and seasonal tasks and responds to emergency situations. The Highway Department's Central Garage maintains 131 of the Town's vehicles and equipment. The fleet includes dump, garbage, utility and pickup trucks, payloaders, salt spreaders, police and administrative vehicles, and a variety of small tractors and accessory equipment.
The Highway Department maintains 3.2 miles of trails, 1,800 feet of boardwalks, and 335 feet of wooden bridges in the Town's 75 acres of conservation areas. In addition to maintaining trees, the crew collects garbage, wood chips the trails, repairs and rebuilds boardwalks throughout the trails.
The Highway Department maintains the 8 historic cemeteries in the Town and Villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont (Total acreage: 2.34 acres.)
From October 15 to December 16, the entire Highway crew is involved in leaf collection. During the 2 month period, some 12,000 cubic yards of leaves are collected and hauled away.
The Highway Department maintains 93 acres of parks, grounds and conservation areas which include Memorial Park, Gardens Lake, the Town Center, the Sheldrake Conservancy Property, and the Town's conservation areas.
Maintenance includes periodic patching and resurfacing of the 45 miles of Town roads as well as the repair and replacement of 22.4 miles of sidewalks and 67 miles of curbs.
The Town maintains 57.5 miles of sanitary sewer lines (varying from 8" to 24") and 650 manholes. It also is responsible for maintaining and operating a sewerage pump station which transmits up to 4 million gallons of sanitary sewerage a day.
The Town maintains 1,500 catch basins and approximately 15 miles of storm drain ranging in size from 12" to 72" diameter lines. Maintenance requires periodic cleaning and flushing of the catch basins and storm sewers.
During the winter months, the Highway Department's schedule adjusts to Mother Nature's commands by sending out salt spreaders and snow removal equipment as necessary.
The department maintains 1,390 street lights along Town roads and in public parking lots. It also maintains 1,216 advisory and regulatory signs and 976 street name signs.
The Highway Department maintains over 4,900 trees along Town roads. In addition, the department maintains all trees in the Conservation Areas. All work that is to be performed on privately owned trees is subject to conditions set forth by the relevant boards and commissions.
