Fire Department Overview

The Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department, located at the Weaver Street Firehouse, consists of approximately 70 volunteer firefighters, 14 career firefighters and a very active Junior Firefighter program. The Town Board serves as the Board of Fire Commissioners, and governs the 5 sq. mi. Town of Mamaroneck Fire District.

The TMFD’s apparatus includes:

• One Aerial ladder truck (Ladder 19)

• Three engines (Engines 51, 37 & 36)

• Two rescue vehicles (Rescues 6 & 46)

• Three Chief’s cars

• Two inflatable, gas powered boats.

TMFD members train and drill throughout the year on all types of subjects such as fire attack techniques, auto accident victim extrication, hazardous material response, weapons of mass destruction, confined space rescue, water and ice rescue.

The Department now has a Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST), also known as a Rapid Intervention Team/Crew (RIT/RIC), which is a team that comprises four or more firefighters dedicated solely to search and rescue of other firefighters in distress. The FAST team is one of two in the sound shore area available to provide assistance to the TMFD and surrounding communities. The department’s ongoing commitment to the best training, equipment and personnel is reflected in the Fire District’s excellent class rating by the Insurance Service Organization. The types of calls the TMFD responds to run the gamut from traditional fire call (structure fires, car fires, automatic alarms, suspicious/burning odors, gas leaks, CO alarms) to auto accidents requiring victim extrication using the "Jaws of Life" to EMS calls and downed power lines. The Fire Department also responds to public assistance calls such as flooding conditions or homeowners locked out of the house or a child locked in. In 2007, TMFD responded to1121 requests for help including 33 structure fires and 221 EMS "runs". Throughout the year, TMFD members also conduct educational seminars for local school children, community groups and tenant associations. In addition, it conducts an annual "Open House" where firefighters conduct demonstrations such as, how to escape from a smoke filled room, display latest firefighting equipment and apparatus.
