Police Department FAQ's

1) What phone number should I call in an emergency

911 - In the Town of Mamaroneck a sworn police officer will answer the phone and dispatch appropriate police units. The officer can also route emergency calls to the ambulance services (VAC and EMS) and the Fire Department.

Please also note that with our enhanced 911 service, when you call from a residence, business or pay phone, your location is automatically received on a screen at Police Headquarters.

Officers respond to every unverified 911 call, even if no-one speaks on the other end of the phone, or the phone is hung up after 911 is dialed.

If you have an emergency, and you or the person dialing cannot speak, (you are choking, or you direct a small child to dial, for example) dial 911 anyway. Officers will respond immediately.

Cell phone 911 calls operate differently and are received by the New York State Police who reroute the calls to the appropriate police agencies

2) I called 911 and the officer told me to call 381-6100. Why?

911 is for emergencies and is only to be used to report crimes in progress, auto accidents, fights, injuries or serious illness, incidents in which someone's life is in jeopardy or there is a potential of imminent injury to a person. Using 911 lines for non-emergency calls could result in emergency calls not getting through promptly.

3) Where is Police Headquarters located?

The Town of Mamaroneck police station is located in the Town Center building, 740 West Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck, NY 10543, on the lower level, next to the Mamaroneck High School football field.

4) What can I do to avoid becoming a crime victim?

Our Detective Division is responsible for crime prevention education, and would be happy to advise individuals or groups on how to avoid becoming victims. The detectives can also come to your home and conduct a Home Security Survey. Please call the Police Desk at 381 6100 and ask for the Detective Division.

5) How can I obtain a permit to park my car in one of the Town owned parking lots?

Please contact the Town Clerk's office at 381-7870.

6) Can someone in the Police Department fingerprint me for a license, adoption
proceedings, etc.?

Yes. The Detective Division will take non-criminal fingerprints for Town residents by appointment.  Please come to Police Headquarters to fill out an application. Once the application is submitted, a detective will contact you promptly and set up a mutually convenient appointment. The Town has set a fee for this service.  The current fee is $15.00 for the first fingerprint card, and $5.00 for each additional fingerprint card for prints taken on the same occasion.

7) How can I report a street light out?

Street lights in need of repair should be reported to the Town Highway Department at 381-7826.  If you have no luck there, please call the police desk at 381-6100.  The Desk Officer can take the information and pass it on to the Highway Department.

8) How can I find out if school has been cancelled due to weather?

School cancellations are broadcast on several local radio stations.  Please tune in WFAS, 103.9 FM, or WVOX at 1460 AM.

9) If I have an emergency, may I park my car on the street overnight?

Yes. Overnight parking passes are available at Police Headquarters on a conditional basis. Please call the Police Desk at 381-6100 for details.

10) Will the Police Department watch my house while I am away?

Yes. Residents can enter information on a "Dark House" card at Police Headquarters. Officers will check the residence periodically to make sure it is secure. The "contact" information you supply will be used to notify you of any problems encountered.
