Ambulance & Rescue FAQ's

1. Who is the Ambulance District?

The Town of Mamaroneck Ambulance District was established as of July 1994, to coordinate the continued provision of Paramedic (Advanced Life Support) Services for the Village of Mamaroneck, the Village of Larchmont, and the Town of Mamaroneck. Volunteers of the Larchmont/Town of Mamaroneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the Mamaroneck Emergency Medical Services provide the Basic Life Support Ambulance Services.

2. What is the Ambulance District responsible for?

The Tri-Municipal Ambulance District oversees the administration, operations, and quality of all emergency paramedic ambulance services. The Ambulance District provides paid Paramedics to both Volunteer Services, twenty-four Hours a day, 365 days a year.

3. What can I expect from the Ambulance District?

The residents of the district can anticipate that the success of this program will reduce the overall taxpayer contribution through insurance reimbursement that would otherwise be lost. Additionally, the consolidation of administrative and financial controls will improve the cost effectiveness of all the Ambulance Services while improving the quality of care. The ability to continue to provide state of the art emergency medical services is to everyone's benefit, and is made possible through this cooperative and creative plan to manage the cost.

4. How are Ambulance Services paid for?

The cost of maintaining this high quality Advanced Life Support Service was historically provided through taxes and donations. The Ambulance District has implemented billing in 1994 to reduce the tax contribution required to fund the ambulance services. The budget for the Ambulance District (which includes the operating budgets of Larchmont VAC and Mamaroneck EMS) is now 2/3rd funded by user charges, and 1/3rd through property taxes.

5. Why should I donate to the Volunteer Ambulance Services of Larchmont VAC and Mamaroneck EMS?

Donations to the Larchmont/Town of Mamaroneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the
Mamaroneck Emergency Medical Services remain an essential source of funding for capital items, such as new ambulances. The volunteer organizations require donations to succeed in recruiting and retaining membership from the community.  The Ambulance District paramedics are the only paid employees, all other members of the ambulance team; Officers, Technicians, and Drivers are volunteers.

6. What if I want to Volunteer?

That would be terrific, we always need volunteers for Larchmont VAC at 155 Weaver Street, Larchmont and for Mamaroneck EMS at 220 South Barry Avenue, Mamaroneck. Please contact the Captain of Larchmont VAC at 914-834-3348 or the Captain of Mamaroneck EMS at 914-698-7315. Larchmont VAC or Mamaroneck EMS

7. What happens if I call 911 for emergency ambulance services?

Every 911 call for emergency medical assistance is received by the local Police Department, which assigns a Police Officer to respond, and immediately alerts the respective Volunteer Ambulance Service. The ambulance responds with a certified paid Paramedic and volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians who are able to provide lifesaving medical care at the scene.

8. What do Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians do?

Paramedics provide skills such as intubations, the ability to read EKGs, defibrillate stopped hearts, and intravenous medications. Emergency Medical Technicians are able to provide airway management, assessment, oxygen, splinting and immobilization among other skills. The ambulance personnel are able to consult a physician by radio when needed, and then provide notification to the hospital of the patient's condition prior to arrival.

9. How do I know the Paramedics are any good?

All of the paramedics and emergency medical technicians are required to attend monthly training events, and re-certify every three years. The Ambulance District, and the Emergency Department Physicians are always working together to continuously improve the knowledge and skills of our providers while monitoring the quality of care.

10. Is there a charge for Ambulance Services?

Patient care and ambulance services are provided FIRST and ALWAYS without regard to ability to pay for services. All patients transported by the Ambulance District with Larchmont VAC or Mamaroneck EMS will be billed for this service. Our rates are consistent with the surrounding community and are in fact the lowest in Westchester County.

11. What are the charges for Ambulance Services?

Basic Life support calls are charged at $350, plus mileage and oxygen if required. Patients who require Paramedic Services will be additionally charged $75. These charges are well within what is considered reasonable by most insurance carriers. Every effort is made to send ambulance bills directly to the insurance carrier for payment.

12. What if I receive an Ambulance Bill?

If the ambulance personnel were unable to obtain your insurance information from you or the hospital, please call our billing services at 1-800-927-5845 with your information.

13. What if my Insurance Carrier sends me a check?

If your insurance carrier provides reimbursement directly to you, please endorse and forward this payment to the Town of Mamaroneck Ambulance District or the Billing Service Address. If you prefer, a personal check can be sent with a copy of the Explanation of Benefits.

14. What if I have received a Balance Due notice or “Your Claim Is Stuck” postcard?

If you have received a “Balance Due” notice or “Your Claim Is Stuck” postcard, please contact the Ambulance District, Billing Services to provide information for any Secondary Insurance Coverage.  If your insurance carrier provided partial reimbursement, the Ambulance District may provide financial hardship consideration in specific circumstances.
