The New York State's School Tax Relief (STAR) program is offered by the Office of Real Property Tax Services, a division of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. It provides a partial exemption from school property taxes for all residential, owner occupied, primary residences.
Filing deadline: May 1
The Basic STAR exemption is available to anyone who owns and lives in his or her home and earns less than $500,000. Proof of residency is required and a copy of such proof (driver's license and telephone or utility bill) must be submitted with your application. No annual renewal is required.
Filing deadline: May 1
The Enhanced STAR exemption is available to all senior citizens whose property is the primary residence of at least one of the owners. Owners must be 65 years of age or older on or before December 31, unless property is owned by husband and wife, or siblings one of which is 65 years of age or older. The combined 2010 federal adjusted gross income, minus taxable IRA distributions, cannot exceed $79,050. Proof of residency must be submitted with your application, along with proof of age and income. Annual renewal is required. However, if you file a NYS tax return, you may choose to participate in the STAR Income Verification Program which eliminates the need to file for annual renewal.
Please note: senior citizens already enrolled in the Senior Citizen Exemption Program
are automatically enrolled in the Enhanced STAR Exemption.
